HUGS Incorporated visits STARBASE at Barksdale AFB
The Barksdale Air Force Base STARBASE program was created to allow fifth-grade students to explore the worlds of science, technology, engineering, and math. Over 2,00 students each year experience challenges designed to provide foundational skills in STEM and generate interest in pursuing these fields in future careers. The students at Gibsland Elementary School, sponsored by HUGS, incorporated attendees to a week-long STARBASE session where they received STEAM lessons (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
Extending the baseline program's mission, 2.0 is designed to give students with an increased interest in STEM the opportunity to participate in deeper, long-term projects in either an after-school or in-school setting. The 6th-8th grade students utilize drones, aero gliders, and CO# cars, while 9th-12th-grade students participate in the national rocketry program The American Rocketry Challenge (TARC).
